Non-invasive smile restoration

the benefits of bonding, shaping & contouring

Dental bonding, shaping, and contouring offer a lot of unique benefits. First, it’s minimally-invasive. The procedure can be done without numbing, since it does not involve drilling away a large amount of enamel.

It’s also very fast. Unlike veneers, which take 2-3 weeks and several appointments, bonding, shaping & contouring can be used to restore multiple teeth in just a single appointment. The process is also much less expensive than veneers in most cases, making this a good option if you’re on a tight budget.

Understanding

bonding, shaping & contouring

what is bonding, shaping & contouring

Dental bonding uses dental resin to restore your smile. This resin is applied directly to the outside of a tooth once it’s been prepared, and Dr. Griffin will shape and sculpt it to cover up imperfections like minor chips, gaps in your smile, discolored teeth, and more. This results in a natural-looking, strong, and beautiful tooth.

Shaping & contouring is often used alongside dental bonding. In this process, Dr. Griffin uses a special tool to sand away a small amount of enamel from some of your teeth. This is done to remove points and very small chips, and to even out your teeth for a more pleasing appearance.

what can I expect from the process?

First, Dr. Griffin will clean your mouth and apply a mild acid to the teeth that are being bonded. This roughens the surface, allowing the bonding material to bond tightly to the tooth enamel.

After this, she will select a tooth-colored resin that matches the color of your other teeth, and apply it to the tooth. Using special tools, the resin will be shaped and hardened to restore your tooth. Once the overall size and shape are right, Dr. Griffin will trim and buff the treated tooth to ensure it fits perfectly with the surrounding teeth.

If you’re receiving shaping & contouring, this will usually be done after your teeth are bonded. Dr. Griffin will simply use a hand-held sanding tool to remove a very small amount of enamel from each tooth that is being shaped, providing you with a more consistent, even smile.
